California as an island, “Quivi”, Missouri River flowing almost to the Pacific coast. Above California “Fretum Anian” separates the island from “Terra Isonis incogn”. Tracks of several voyages are shown in the Pacific. Two, uncolored, elaborate cartouches with scenes of native life and conversion to Christianity. Finely engraved and highly detailed maps throughout. Original ½ calf binding in good condition. A few minor repairs to some maps, but in general maps are very clean and in exceptional condition. Philadelphia, 1822 (18" x 12-1/2", binding) Here is the first edition of one of Carey & Lea’s  most desirable atlases, focused entirely on the Americas. Many highly sought after maps are included in the 46 double paged maps, including individual state maps with detailed text about history, climate and other key aspects. Original hand color. A very informative reference for an early United States. Rebound with ½ black calfskin, gilt decorated spine matching existing, paper covered boards with black leather gilt decorated corners and label. Pages were professionally cleaned where needed, and any chips, etc. repaired. Most maps near fine, others with faint foxing. Pages quite flexible and not brittle. Original hand color distinguishes counties and provinces and political boundaries throughout. The Mexico map shows an early configuration of Texas, still shown as a  province of Mexico, but naming the Austin colony. Great detail within each state, early county configurations in the then western most states. Original marbled boards, new black leather corners.
