of the Americas, boldly engraved with exceptional cartouches. California
as an island, “Quivi”, Missouri River flowing almost to
the Pacific coast. Above California “Fretum Anian” separates
the island from “Terra Isonis incogn”. Tracks of several
voyages are shown in the Pacific. Two, uncolored, elaborate cartouches
with scenes of native life and conversion to Christianity. Numerous
other features make this a fun, and particularly attractive map to
study. Single fold as issued, full margins. Bright color on sturdy

Land” just across the straight “Fretum Vries”. Mythical
lakes and rivers in Southeast Asia, the Great Wall protecting Peking, several
parts of the East Indies still undefined. Nova Zembla connected to the
continent along a poorly understood northern coast. Full of interesting
detail. Hand color distinguishes kingdoms and major regions. Two very elaborate

Many highly sought after maps are included in the 46 double paged maps, including individual state maps with detailed text about history, climate and other key aspects. Original hand color. A very informative reference for an early United States. Rebound with ½ black calfskin, gilt decorated spine matching existing, paper covered boards with black leather gilt decorated corners and label. Pages were professionally cleaned where needed, and any chips, etc. repaired. Most maps near fine, others with faint foxing. Pages quite flexible and not brittle. one of the earliest ones to indicate New Guinea was separate from

c.1672 (11-1/2" x 13-3/4") Unusual and striking image of the Caspian
Sea, surrounded by adjoining countries, distinguished with lovely hand color
in outline. Rhumb lines create a sea chart look and the sea is embellished
with five ships and compass rose. Cyrillic and Roman names are shown. Several
costal cities depicted. Lovely title cartouche with diverse grouping of peoples
of the region. North to left. A great item for the serious collector of the
region. I find no record of this in previous sales. Single fold. Lower margin

16689: HONDIUS/JANSSON Mappa Aestivarum Insularum, atlas Barmudas
dictarum...c1647 (15-1/2" x 20") Famous, classic map of
the Bahamas, based on survey by Richard Norwood in 1618. The island is
divided in to the original “Tribes”, which became administrative
parishes. Each is named for a major stockholder in the Bermuda Company,
also known as Somers Isles Company. The landowners are shown in legend
at bottom of map. The image of Bermuda is superimposed on the Atlantic
with parts of Virginia, Hispaniola and England shown, with a small image
of Bermuda at center. Single fold as issued, sturdy paper with full margins.

Exquisite engraving style unique to Scherer. Exotic land
and sea animals, forests, mountains and ships embellish
the image. The Great wall shown protecting “Pechin”.

Seutter’s striking map of the world in two hemispheres,
surrounded by eight smaller world perspectives and four
smaller spheres. The primary eastern and western hemispheres
are full of great detail, known and supposed. California
as an island, below a large “Terra Essonis” and
with Quivira on the mainland. Australia is taking shape
but largely undefined. Japan with large “Terra
Yedso”. The tracks of several early explorers shown,
including Dampier and Tasman. Six polar projections elaborate
on the still largely unknown polar regions. Bold engraving
embellishes map with wind-heads, ornate cartouches and
