Egg, Frankfurt 1594 (16.0x19.9cm) + title above and descriptive text
with illuminated initial letter below. Columbus
was seated with his Spanish companions at the dinner table.
He had asked who could make an egg stand upright, so when they all tried
and failed, he proceeded to flatten the eggshell by lightly tapping it on
his
plate before standing it up. Although
this simple trick is sometimes attributed to Columbus, it was perhaps Brunelleschi,
who first performed it to prove that the great dome of Florence cathedral,
which he designed, was not a physical impossibility.

Pizarro returned to Spain in 1528 to persuade the king of Spain to grant
him the viceroy of Peru. He carried
with him gold and silver as evidence of the great Inca empire. The royal
agreement
was signed on 26th July, 1529, in which Pizarro was granted the
right of discovery and conquest to a distance of 200 leagues south of Guayaquil,
along
with the title of Governor and Captain-General, with Almagro, Commander of
Tumbez.
